Challenge
A big challenge for the Palm Oil Industry in Malaysia is Waste Processing
July 24, 2023
The palm oil industry in Malaysia makes a major contribution to the country’s economic activities by producing various goods and services. However, like every production activity, the Palm Oil Industry also produces negative impacts in the form of waste as a by-product. Waste, or what is also known as pollutant, is an inseparable part of industry, both large and small. The impact of the waste produced can disrupt environmental balance. One form of waste produced by the Palm Oil Industry is liquid waste, namely liquid residue from the production process or industrial activities.
Before disposing of liquid waste into water bodies, the Palm Oil Industry must ensure that the liquid waste being disposed of is safe for the environment. For this reason, liquid waste sampling must be carried out at the liquid waste processing outlet point, namely before the liquid waste is discharged into water bodies. The samples are then tested in an accredited laboratory, and the test results are compared with quality standards in accordance with applicable environmental regulations.

Although industry has the advantage of treating wastewater separately from domestic waste or rainwater, there are several challenges in treating wastewater in industry that must be considered. Among them is knowledge about the material balance of raw materials and water used in the production process, fluctuations in waste water quality and liquid waste discharge, variations in the types of liquid waste produced with high pollutant levels for several parameters, and the characteristics of waste water that do not change after used, such as cooling water.

Therefore, choosing the right waste processing product is the key to maintaining sustainability and environmental sustainability. Advanced and environmentally friendly processing technology can help reduce the negative impact of liquid waste produced by the palm oil industry, so that we can move towards a more sustainable industrial era. By realizing the importance of choosing the right waste processing products, the palm oil industry can play an active role in preserving the environment and improving the quality of life for local communities and future generations.
